Kenmore Summary

Kenmore, Washington is a city located in King County, Washington, United States. It is situated on the northern shore of Lake Washington, approximately 12 miles northeast of Seattle. The population was 20,460 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Kenmore was originally inhabited by the Snoqualmie and Duwamish Native American tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s, and the area was officially incorporated as the City of Kenmore in 1998.
The city was named after the Kenmore Hotel, which was built in the area in 1901. The hotel was named after the town of Kenmore in Scotland. The hotel was a popular destination for Seattle residents, and it was the site of the first Kenmore Air Harbor, which was established in 1946.

Geography

Kenmore is located at 47°44′N 122°14′W (47.735, -122.233). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.3 square miles (16.3 km2), of which, 5.9 square miles (15.3 km2) is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) is water.

Kenmore is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for local residents.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 20,460 people, 8,717 households, and 5,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,457.3 people per square mile (1,339.2/km2). There were 9,093 housing units at an average density of 1,539.3 per square mile (594.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 8.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 3.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.3% of the population.
There were 8,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,845. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $40,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $30,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
