Ione Summary

Ione is a small town located in Pend Oreille County, Washington, United States. It is situated on the Pend Oreille River, near the Idaho border. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Ione was founded in 1891 by the Northern Pacific Railway. The town was named after Ione, the daughter of a railroad official. The town was incorporated in 1909.

Geography

Ione is located at 48°17′N 117°17′W (48.28, -117.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Ione's economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 230 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 778.6 people per square mile (301.3/km2). There were 250 housing units at an average density of 357.1 per square mile (138.1/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 230 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,000.
