Frederickson Summary

Frederickson is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 8,845 at the 2010 census. It is located in the South Hill area of Pierce County, just south of Puyallup.

History

Frederickson was first settled in the late 1800s by homesteaders who were attracted to the area by its rich soil and abundant timber. The area was originally known as "Frederickson's Prairie" after one of the first settlers, John Frederickson. The area was officially incorporated as a town in 1909.
In the early 1900s, the area was primarily agricultural, with dairy farms and orchards being the main sources of income. The area was also home to several sawmills and logging operations.
In the 1950s, the area began to experience rapid growth as the population of the Seattle metropolitan area increased. This growth was fueled by the construction of Interstate 5, which provided easy access to the area from Seattle.

Economy

Frederickson is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several industrial and manufacturing businesses.
The area is served by the Puyallup School District, which includes several elementary, middle, and high schools.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,845 people, 3,093 households, and 2,323 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,062.2 people per square mile (796.3/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 767.3 per square mile (296.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 81.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 4.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 3.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.2% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.30.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $60,938, and the median income for a family was $67,917. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $36,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
