East Renton Highlands Summary
East Renton Highlands is a census-designated place (CDP) located in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census. It is located east of Renton and is part of the Seattle metropolitan area.
History
The area now known as East Renton Highlands was originally inhabited by the Snoqualmie and Muckleshoot tribes. The first non-Native American settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s. The area was originally known as Renton Highlands, and was annexed by the City of Renton in the early 1900s. In the 1950s, the area was re-designated as East Renton Highlands.
Geography
East Renton Highlands is located at 47°27'25"N 122°09'45"W (47.456944, -122.1625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
East Renton Highlands is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, a hardware store, and several restaurants. The area is also home to several industrial and manufacturing businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,945 people, 3,093 households, and 2,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,125.3 people per square mile (819.7/km2). There were 3,213 housing units at an average density of 764.3/sq mi (295.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 4.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.7% were non-families. 15.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 3.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $63,917, and the median income for a family was $68,917. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $36,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,917. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
