Desert Aire Summary

Desert Aire is a small unincorporated community located in Grant County, Washington, United States. It is situated on the Columbia River, approximately 20 miles south of Moses Lake. The population of Desert Aire was 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

History

Desert Aire was founded in the early 1960s as a planned community. It was developed by the Desert Aire Corporation, which was owned by the family of the late William H. "Bill" Gates Sr., father of Microsoft founder Bill Gates. The community was designed to be a retirement and recreational destination, and was marketed as a "desert oasis" with a golf course, swimming pool, and other amenities.
The community was originally planned to have a population of 10,000, but the population never reached that level. In the late 1970s, the Desert Aire Corporation sold the community to the Grant County Public Utility District, which continues to manage the community today.

Geography

Desert Aire is located in Grant County, Washington, at an elevation of 1,068 feet (326 m). It is situated on the Columbia River, approximately 20 miles south of Moses Lake. The community is located in the Columbia Basin, a region of the state known for its dry climate and desert-like conditions.
The community is surrounded by the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge, which provides a variety of recreational opportunities, including fishing, hunting, and bird watching.

Economy

The economy of Desert Aire is largely based on tourism and recreation. The community is home to a number of resorts and recreational facilities, including a golf course, swimming pool, and marina.
