Algona Summary

Algona is a city located in King County, Washington, United States. It is located in the Seattle metropolitan area, about 15 miles south of downtown Seattle. The population was 8,890 at the 2010 census.

History

Algona was first settled in 1877 by a group of Swedish immigrants. The town was named after Algona, Iowa, which was the hometown of one of the settlers. The town was incorporated in 1909.
In the early 1900s, Algona was a small farming community. The town was known for its dairy farms and its production of eggs, butter, and cheese. The town also had a sawmill and a brickyard.
In the 1950s, Algona began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to Seattle. The town was annexed by the city of Auburn in 1965, and the population grew to over 10,000 by the 1970s.

The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 8.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 4.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.
