Alger Summary

Alger is a small unincorporated community located in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. It is situated in the Cascade foothills, approximately 20 miles northeast of Seattle. The population of Alger was estimated to be 1,845 in 2019.

History

Alger was first settled in the late 1800s by homesteaders who were attracted to the area by its abundant timber and fertile soil. The town was named after Alger Smith, a local farmer who owned a large tract of land in the area. The first post office was established in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Alger was a thriving logging and farming community. The town had a sawmill, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a school. The town also had a hotel, a saloon, and a dance hall.
In the 1920s, the logging industry began to decline and the town's population began to dwindle. By the 1940s, the town had become a virtual ghost town.
In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence as people began to move to the area to take advantage of the area's natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The town was incorporated in 1959.

Alger is located in the Cascade foothills, approximately 20 miles northeast of Seattle. The town is situated at the base of the Cascade Mountains, with the nearby towns of Gold Bar and Index to the east and the town of Skykomish to the west.
