Airway Heights is a city located in Spokane County, Washington, United States. The city is located just west of Spokane, Washington, and is part of the Spokane Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Airway Heights was 6,114.

History

The area that is now Airway Heights was originally inhabited by the Spokane Tribe of Native Americans. The first non-native settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s, and the town was officially incorporated in 1914. The town was named after the nearby Airway Heights Military Reservation, which was established in 1941. The military reservation was used as a training facility for the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

Geography

Airway Heights is located in Spokane County, Washington, at an elevation of 2,072 feet (631 m). The city is located just west of Spokane, Washington, and is part of the Spokane Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city covers an area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), and is bordered by the cities of Spokane, Cheney, and Medical Lake.

Airway Heights has a semi-arid climate, with hot summers and cold winters. The average annual temperature is 48.2 °F (9.0 °C), and the average annual precipitation is 13.3 inches (340 mm).

Airway Heights is home to several major employers, including the Fairchild Air Force Base, the Northern Quest Resort & Casino, and the Spokane Tribe of Indians. The city also has a thriving retail sector, with several shopping centers and retail outlets.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 5.3% African American, 1.3% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 5.3% from other races, and 4.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
