Virginia is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It is bordered by Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina, and the Atlantic Ocean. Virginia is divided into 95 counties and 38 independent cities, which are considered county-equivalents for census purposes.
The counties of Virginia are divided into three distinct regions: Northern Virginia, Central Virginia, and Southwestern Virginia. Northern Virginia is home to the state’s largest cities, including Arlington, Fairfax, and Alexandria. Central Virginia is home to the state capital, Richmond, as well as Charlottesville and Lynchburg. Southwestern Virginia is home to the Appalachian Mountains and is known for its rural beauty.
The counties of Virginia are governed by county boards of supervisors, which are elected by the citizens of each county. The boards of supervisors are responsible for setting the county’s budget, levying taxes, and providing services such as public safety, health care, and education.
The largest county in Virginia is Fairfax County, which is located in Northern Virginia. Fairfax County is home to the state’s largest city, Fairfax, and is the most populous county in the state. It is also home to George Mason University and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum.
The second largest county in Virginia is Prince William County, which is located in Northern Virginia. Prince William County is home to the cities of Manassas and Woodbridge, and is the second most populous county in the state.
The third largest county in Virginia is Loudoun County, which is located in Northern Virginia. Loudoun County is home to the cities of Leesburg and Sterling, and is the third most populous county in the state.
The fourth largest county in Virginia is Henrico County, which is located in Central Virginia. Henrico County is home to the cities of Richmond and Glen Allen, and is the fourth most populous county in the state.
The fifth largest county in Virginia is Chesterfield County, which is located in Central Virginia. Chesterfield County is home to the cities of Chester and Midlothian, and is the fifth most populous county in the state.
