Hampton City, Virginia is a city located in the Hampton Roads region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is the seventh-largest city in the state and the second-largest in the Hampton Roads region. The city is situated on the Hampton Roads Harbor, a large natural harbor that is part of the Chesapeake Bay. It is bordered by the cities of Newport News, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach.
History
The area that is now Hampton City was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1600s. The area was part of the Powhatan Confederacy, a powerful Native American confederacy that controlled much of the Tidewater region of Virginia. The area was first explored by English settlers in 1607, and the first permanent English settlement was established in 1610. The settlement was named Elizabeth City, after the wife of the governor of Virginia, Sir Thomas Dale.
In 1619, the Virginia Company of London established the first representative government in the New World in the area. This government was known as the House of Burgesses, and it was the first legislative body in the New World. The House of Burgesses was responsible for the establishment of the first public school in the New World, the College of William and Mary, which was founded in 1693.
In 1705, the city of Hampton was established. The city was named after Henry Wriothesley, the 3rd Earl of Southampton, who was a major investor in the Virginia Company of London. The city was an important port and trading center, and it was the site of the first naval base in the United States, the Gosport Navy Yard.
In the 19th century, Hampton City became an important center for the slave trade. The city was a major port for the importation of slaves from Africa, and it was also a major center for the sale of slaves. The city was also an important center for the Confederate Navy during the Civil War.
Geography
Hampton City is located in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, on the Hampton Roads Harbor. The city is bordered by the cities of Newport News, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach.
