Winchester city Summary
Winchester City, Virginia is located in the northern part of the state, in the Shenandoah Valley. It is the county seat of Frederick County and is the principal city of the Winchester, Virginia-West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. History
Winchester City was founded in 1744 by James Wood, a surveyor and land speculator. The city was named after Winchester, England, and was originally known as Frederick Town. The city was incorporated in 1778 and became the county seat of Frederick County in 1780. During the Civil War, Winchester City was the site of several battles, including the First and Second Battles of Winchester. The city was occupied by Union forces in 1862 and 1863, and was the site of the Battle of Cedar Creek in 1864.

Winchester City is located in the northern part of the Shenandoah Valley, between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains. The city is situated at the intersection of Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 11, and is approximately 75 miles west of Washington, D.C. The city has a total area of 8.3 square miles, of which 8.2 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. The city is located in the humid subtropical climate zone, with hot, humid summers and mild winters.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population. The median household income in the city was $45,837, and the median family income was $54,837. Winchester City is home to a number of educational institutions, including Shenandoah University, Lord Fairfax Community College, and the Winchester campus of the University of Virginia. The city is also home to a number of cultural attractions, including the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society, and the Handley Regional Library.
