Lynchburg City, Virginia is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the central part of the state. It is the county seat of Campbell County and is the fifth largest city in the state. The city is situated along the James River and is home to a population of approximately 80,000 people.
History
The area that is now Lynchburg City was first settled in 1757 by John Lynch, who established a ferry service across the James River. The city was officially established in 1786 and was named after Lynch. During the American Revolution, Lynchburg served as a supply depot for the Continental Army. After the war, the city became an important trading center and was the site of the first railroad in the state.
In the 19th century, Lynchburg became an important industrial center, with the development of the tobacco industry and the building of the James River and Kanawha Canal. The city was also the site of the first Confederate victory of the Civil War, when General Jubal Early defeated Union forces at the Battle of Lynchburg in 1864.
