Norfolk City, Virginia is located in the southeastern corner of the state, on the Chesapeake Bay. It is the second-largest city in Virginia, with a population of approximately 244,000 people. Norfolk is a major port city, and is home to the world's largest naval base, Naval Station Norfolk. The city is also home to several universities, including Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, and Eastern Virginia Medical School.

History

The area that is now Norfolk was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1600s. The first European settlers arrived in the early 1700s, and the city was officially established in 1705. The city was named after Norfolk, England, and was initially a tobacco port. In 1775, the city was the site of the Battle of Great Bridge, which was the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War.
In the 19th century, Norfolk became a major port city, and the city's economy was largely based on shipping and trade. The city was also a major center for shipbuilding, and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard was established in 1801. During the Civil War, Norfolk was occupied by Union forces, and the city was heavily damaged by the war.

Geography
