Virginia Beach City Summary
Virginia Beach City, VA is a coastal city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is the most populous city in the state, with a population of 447,021 as of the 2019 census. The city is situated on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It is bordered by the cities of Norfolk to the north, Chesapeake to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
History
The area that is now Virginia Beach was first inhabited by Native Americans, including the Powhatan, Nansemond, and Chesapeake tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1607, when the English established the Jamestown Settlement. The area was part of Princess Anne County until 1963, when it was incorporated as the independent city of Virginia Beach.
The city was initially a resort town, with its beaches and boardwalks becoming popular destinations for tourists. In the late 19th century, the city began to develop as a resort destination, with the construction of the Virginia Beach Hotel in 1883.
