White Hall Summary
White Hall is a small village located in Greene County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,706 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
White Hall was founded in 1836 by William White, a settler from Kentucky. The village was originally known as White's Hall, but the name was eventually shortened to White Hall. The village was incorporated in 1867.
White Hall was a stop on the Chicago and Alton Railroad, which was built in 1853. The railroad brought economic growth to the village, and it became a center for the surrounding agricultural community.
Geography
White Hall is located at 39°45'25" North, 90°30'25" West (39.756944, -90.506944). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
White Hall's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The village also has a few small businesses, including a hardware store, a grocery store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,706 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,255.8 people per square mile (871.3/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 986.7 per square mile (381.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945.
