Seymour Summary

Seymour is a small village located in Jackson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carbondale-Marion-Herrin, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Seymour was founded in 1858 by William Seymour, a settler from Kentucky. The village was originally known as Seymourville, but the name was changed to Seymour in 1868. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Seymour is located at 37°51'25"N 89°17'45"W (37.856944, -89.295833). According to the 2010 census, Seymour has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2), all land.

Economy

Seymour is a small rural village with a limited economy. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a few other small shops. The village also has a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,811.8 people per square mile (700.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 802.9 per square mile (309.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,945.
