History

Rockdale was first settled in 1834 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as "Rockdale Station" due to its location on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The village was officially incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Rockdale is located at 41°25'25"N 87°51'45"W (41.423, -87.862). The village is situated in the northeastern corner of Will County, Illinois, and is bordered by the villages of Monee to the north, Manhattan to the east, and Frankfort to the south. The village is located approximately 40 miles southwest of Chicago and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land.

Economy

The economy of Rockdale is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The village is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a printing company.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $54,375, and the median income for a family was $62,500. Males had a median income of $45,000 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $23,945.
