Nokomis is a small village located in Montgomery County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Taylorville Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Nokomis was founded in 1858 by a group of settlers from Nokomis, Illinois. The town was named after the Native American heroine of Longfellow's poem, The Song of Hiawatha. The first post office was established in 1859.
In 1867, the Chicago and Alton Railroad was built through the town, and the village was incorporated in 1872. The first school was built in 1873, and the first church was built in 1875.
In the late 19th century, Nokomis was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a canning factory.

Geography

Nokomis is located at 39°25'25" North, 89°17'45" West (39.423, -89.296). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
