History
Montrose was first settled in 1819 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was originally known as “Mud Creek” due to the muddy banks of the Sangamon River. In 1837, the village was renamed Montrose after the Battle of Montrose in Scotland. The village was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Montrose was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a sawmill. The village also had a number of stores, a hotel, and a post office.
In the early 20th century, Montrose began to decline as the railroad bypassed the village. The population began to decline and many of the businesses closed. In the 1950s, the village was revitalized with the construction of a new school and the opening of a new grocery store.
