Manteno Summary

Manteno is a village located in Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,042 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kankakee-Bradley Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet, IL-IN-WI Combined Statistical Area.

History

Manteno was founded in 1855 by William and Mary Ann Manteno. The village was named after the couple, who were of French descent. The first settlers in the area were of German and Irish descent. The village was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Manteno was a major stop on the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad. The railroad brought many new businesses to the area, including a brickyard, a lumberyard, and a grain elevator.

Geography

Manteno is located at 41°14′N 87°51′W (41.23, -87.85). According to the 2010 census, Manteno has a total area of 4.8 square miles (12.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Manteno is home to several businesses, including a manufacturing plant, a trucking company, and a retail store. The village also has a number of restaurants, bars, and other small businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,845 people, 2,093 households, and 1,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,219.3 people per square mile (470.2/km2). There were 2,179 housing units at an average density of 449.7 per square mile (173.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.17% White, 0.45% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.27.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,902, and the median income for a family was $58,958. Males had a median income of $41,944 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
