Exeter Summary

Exeter is a small village located in Scott County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Exeter was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New England. The village was named after Exeter, New Hampshire, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1837.
Exeter was incorporated as a village in 1872. The village was a major stop on the Jacksonville and Southeastern Railroad, which ran from Jacksonville to Springfield. The railroad was built in 1871 and operated until the late 1940s.

Geography

Exeter is located at 39°45'25" North, 90°17'45" West (39.756944, -90.295833). According to the 2010 census, Exeter has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

Exeter's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 365.2 per square mile (141.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 5.3% of those age 65 or over.
