Cowden Summary

Cowden is a small village located in Shelby County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Effingham, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Cowden was founded in 1854 by William Cowden, a farmer from Ohio. He purchased the land from the government and began to build a small village. The village was originally called Cowdenville, but the name was changed to Cowden in 1858. The village was incorporated in 1872.
Cowden was a small farming community until the 1950s when the coal industry began to boom in the area. The coal industry brought jobs and economic growth to the area, and the population of Cowden began to grow. The village was also home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a bank.

Geography

Cowden is located at 39°25'25" North, 88°45'45" West (39.423, -88.7625). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Cowden is largely based on agriculture and coal mining. The village is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a bank. The village also has a number of restaurants and bars.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,213.3 people per square mile (468.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 517.2 per square mile (199.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
