The county is bordered by Sangamon County to the north, Scott County to the east, Greene County to the south, and Macoupin County to the west. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, of which 574 square miles is land and 2 square miles (0.3%) is water.
The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern and western parts. The highest point in the county is located in the northwest corner, at an elevation of 890 feet. The county is drained by the Sangamon River, which flows through the northern part of the county.

History

Morgan County was established in 1823 and named after General Daniel Morgan, a Revolutionary War hero. The county was originally part of Sangamon County, but was split off in 1823. The county seat is Jacksonville, which was established in 1825.
The county was largely agricultural in the 19th century, with corn, wheat, and oats being the main crops. The county also had a number of coal mines, which provided employment for many of the residents.
