Ford County Summary
Ford County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,081. Its county seat is Paxton. The county was established in 1859 and named for Thomas Ford, the eighth Governor of Illinois.
Geography
Ford County is located in east-central Illinois, about 90 miles south of Chicago. It is bordered by Iroquois County to the north, Vermilion County to the east, Champaign County to the south, and Livingston County to the west. The county has a total area of 441 square miles, of which 439 square miles is land and 2.2 square miles (0.5%) is water.
The Kankakee River flows through the county from east to west, and the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River flows through the northern part of the county. The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern and western parts.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 14,081 people, 5,541 households, and 3,845 families residing in the county. The population density was 32 people per square mile. There were 6,093 housing units at an average density of 14 per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.2% White, 0.6% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. 1.3% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 5,541 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 26.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the county, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $41,845, and the median income for a family was $50,845. Males had a median income of $37,845 versus $25,845 for females. The per capita income for the county was $20,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
