Braidwood Summary

Braidwood is a small city located in Will County, Illinois, United States. It is situated about 60 miles southwest of Chicago and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population of Braidwood was 5,191 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Braidwood was first settled in the 1830s by settlers from New York and New England. The town was originally known as "Braidwood Station" after the Braidwood family, who owned a large amount of land in the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1855.
In the late 19th century, Braidwood was a major coal mining center. The coal industry was the main source of employment for the town's residents. The coal mines were eventually closed in the 1950s, and the town's economy shifted to other industries.

Geography

Braidwood is located at 41°14'N 88°14'W (41.23, -88.23). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

The economy of Braidwood is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to several factories, including a paper mill, a plastics plant, and a metal fabrication plant. The city also has several retail stores, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a variety of other shops.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
