Geography

Assumption is located at 39°51'45" North, 89°14'45" West (39.8624, -89.2459). According to the 2010 census, Assumption has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

History

Assumption was founded in 1854 by German immigrants. The village was named after the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Catholic feast day. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Economy

The economy of Assumption is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 363.3 per square mile (140.5/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.

The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.17.
