Ashland Summary

Ashland, Illinois is a small village located in the state of Illinois, in the United States. It is located in the county of Cass, and is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The village has a population of approximately 1,000 people, and is located about 30 miles south of Springfield, the state capital.

History

The area that is now Ashland was first settled in 1835 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was originally known as “Hickory Grove”, and was later renamed “Ashland” in 1837. The name was chosen in honor of the Kentucky estate of Henry Clay, who was a prominent statesman and politician of the time.
The village was officially incorporated in 1867, and the first mayor was elected in 1868. The village grew slowly over the years, and by the early 1900s, it had a population of around 500 people.

Geography

Ashland is located in the central part of the state of Illinois, in the county of Cass. It is situated about 30 miles south of Springfield, the state capital. The village is located on the banks of the Sangamon River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland.
The village has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land. The climate in Ashland is characterized by hot, humid summers and cold, wet winters. The average annual temperature is around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average annual precipitation is around 40 inches.
