Wamac Summary
Wamac is a small village located in Marion County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, approximately 25 miles east of Centralia. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Wamac was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Kaskaskia Station" and was a stop on the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1871, the name was changed to Wamac, which is derived from the Native American word for "river".
The village was incorporated in 1872 and was home to a variety of businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a blacksmith shop. The village also had a post office, a school, and a church.

Wamac is located at 38°25'25" North, 89°2'25" West (38.423, -89.040). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all land.
