Wamac Summary

Wamac is a small village located in Marion County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, approximately 25 miles east of Centralia. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Wamac was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Kaskaskia Station" and was a stop on the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1871, the name was changed to Wamac, which is derived from the Native American word for "river".
