University Park Summary

University Park, Illinois is a village located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,129 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located approximately 25 miles south of the Chicago Loop.

History

University Park was founded in 1892 by the University Park Land Company. The company was formed by a group of investors from the University of Chicago who wanted to create a residential community near the university. The village was named after the University of Chicago and was designed to be a residential community for faculty and staff of the university.
The village was incorporated in 1895 and the first mayor was elected in 1896. The village was designed to be a residential community and the first homes were built in the late 1890s. The village was designed to be a commuter community and the first train station was built in 1898.

University Park is located at 41°33′17″N 87°41′45″W (41.554722, -87.695833). According to the 2010 census, University Park has a total area of 2.7 square miles (7.0 km2), all land.

The village is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The village is also home to several large employers, including the University of Chicago, the University of Chicago Medical Center, and the University of Chicago Hospitals.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 7,129 people, 2,845 households, and 1,845 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,637.3 people per square mile (1,017.2/km2). There were 3,039 housing units at an average density of 1,118.3 per square mile (431.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 57.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.3% from other races, and 3.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
