Swansea Summary
Swansea is a village located in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,619 at the 2010 census. Swansea is located in the southwestern part of the Metro-East region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.
History
Swansea was founded in 1837 by a group of German immigrants led by John George Kapp. The village was named after Swansea, Wales, the hometown of one of the settlers. The original settlers were mostly farmers, and the village was largely agricultural until the 1950s.
In the 1950s, Swansea began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to Scott Air Force Base and the St. Louis metropolitan area. The village was incorporated in 1957.
Geography
Swansea is located at 38°30′N 90°7′W (38.50, -90.12). According to the 2010 census, Swansea has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.3 km2), of which 5.8 square miles (15.1 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Swansea is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The village is also home to several large employers, including Scott Air Force Base, which is located just outside of the village limits.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 8,619 people, 3,093 households, and 2,092 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,478.3 people per square mile (571.2/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 567.3 per square mile (219.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,917. Males had a median income of $41,919 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
