St Rose Summary
St. Rose is a small village located in Clinton County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Centralia, Illinois Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
St. Rose was founded in 1854 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Pennsylvania. The village was named after St. Rose of Lima, the patron saint of Peru. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the village grew slowly over the years. In 1872, the first post office was established, and the village was incorporated in 1875.
In the late 19th century, St. Rose was a thriving agricultural community. The village had a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a saloon, and a school. The village also had a railroad station, which connected it to the rest of the country.
In the early 20th century, St. Rose began to decline. The railroad station closed in the 1920s, and the village's population began to decline. By the 1950s, the village had become a virtual ghost town.
