St Libory Summary

Libory, Illinois is a small village located in St. Clair County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, just south of the city of St. Louis. The village has a population of just over 500 people, and is part of the Belleville-Shiloh-O'Fallon Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Libory was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The village was originally known as “Liborius”, after the patron saint of the local Catholic church. The village was officially incorporated in 1872, and the name was changed to Libory.
In the late 1800s, Libory was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain mills, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a number of other businesses. The village also had a train station, which connected it to St. Louis and other nearby towns.
In the early 1900s, Libory began to decline. The Great Depression hit the village hard, and many of the businesses closed. The train station was closed in the 1940s, and the village’s population began to decline.
