History
South Chicago Heights was first settled in the late 19th century by German and Irish immigrants. The village was incorporated in 1925. The village was originally known as "South Chicago" and was later changed to "South Chicago Heights" to avoid confusion with the city of Chicago.
Geography
South Chicago Heights is located at 41°33'17"N 87°37'17"W (41.554722, -87.621389). According to the 2010 census, South Chicago Heights has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of South Chicago Heights is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The village is home to several factories, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant. The village also has several retail stores, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a pharmacy.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,619 people, 1,845 households, and 1,213 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,541.2 people per square mile (1,366.2/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 1,491.5 per square mile (577.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 79.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 5.7% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
