Sherrard Summary

Sherrard, Illinois is a small village located in Mercer County, Illinois. It is situated along the Mississippi River, approximately 20 miles south of the Quad Cities. The population of Sherrard was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Sherrard was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was originally known as “Sherrard’s Landing”, named after the first settler, John Sherrard. The village was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 1800s, Sherrard was a thriving river town. It was home to several businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The village also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the early 1900s, the village began to decline. The sawmill and grist mill closed, and the population began to dwindle. In the 1950s, the village was revitalized when the Illinois Central Railroad built a line through the village. This allowed for the transportation of goods and people, and the village began to grow again.
