History

Preston Heights was founded in 1836 by William Preston, a settler from England. The village was originally known as Prestonville, but the name was changed to Preston Heights in 1845. The village was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Preston Heights was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The village also had a post office, a school, and a church.

Geography

Preston Heights is located at 41°30'N 87°50'W (41.50, -87.83). The village is situated in the southwestern part of Will County, approximately 30 miles southwest of Chicago. The village is bordered by the villages of Beecher, Crete, and Steger.
The village has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land. The village is located in the Kankakee River watershed.

The economy of Preston Heights is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The village also has a post office, a school, and a church.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
