Pontiac Summary
Pontiac, Illinois is a city located in Livingston County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,931 at the 2010 census, making it the county seat of Livingston County. Pontiac is part of the Bloomington–Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Pontiac was founded in 1837 by George F. Smith, a settler from New York. Smith named the city after the famous Ottawa leader, Chief Pontiac. The city was incorporated in 1855.
In the late 19th century, Pontiac was a major stop on the Chicago and Alton Railroad. The city was also home to the Pontiac Correctional Center, which was the first prison in the state of Illinois. The prison was closed in 2002.
Geography
Pontiac is located at 40°52′N 88°37′W (40.867, -88.619). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.3 km2), all land.
Economy
Pontiac is home to several major employers, including the Pontiac Correctional Center, Pontiac Township High School, and the Livingston County Courthouse. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 11,931 people, 4,845 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,019.3 people per square mile (778.3/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 859.3 per square mile (331.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 4,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
