Peru Summary
Peru, Illinois is a city located in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Ottawa-Peru, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 10,295 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in LaSalle County.
History
Peru was founded in 1834 by William B. Archer, who named it after the country of Peru. The city was incorporated in 1851. The first post office was established in 1837.
The city was an important stop on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. The canal was completed in 1848 and provided a major transportation route for goods and people.
The city was also an important stop on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, which connected Chicago to the Mississippi River. The railroad was completed in 1855 and provided a major transportation route for goods and people.
Geography
Peru is located at 41°17'25" North, 89°7'25" West (41.290278, -89.123611). According to the 2010 census, Peru has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.3 km2), of which 5.8 square miles (15.1 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Peru is home to several major employers, including the Illinois Valley Community College, the Illinois Valley Regional Airport, and the Peru Mall. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including the Peru Foundry, the Peru Plastics Corporation, and the Peru Steel Corporation.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 10,295 people, 4,093 households, and 2,619 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,764.3 people per square mile (683.2/km2). There were 4,521 housing units at an average density of 776.3 per square mile (300.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 4.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 4,093 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
