History
Papineau was founded in 1854 by a group of French-Canadian settlers led by Joseph Papineau. The settlers were attracted to the area by the abundance of timber and the fertile soil. The village was named after Joseph Papineau, who was a prominent figure in the French-Canadian community.
The first settlers built log cabins and cleared the land for farming. The village grew slowly but steadily, and by the late 19th century, it had become a thriving community. The village was incorporated in 1891.
