Okawville Summary

Okawville is a village located in Washington County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,092 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Centralia, Illinois Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Okawville was founded in 1854 by German immigrants who named the village after the Okaw River, which runs through the area. The village was incorporated in 1858.
The village was the site of a major coal mining operation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The coal mines were owned by the Okawville Coal Company, which was founded in 1872. The company operated several mines in the area, including the Okawville Mine, which was the largest in the county. The company also operated a coal-washing plant and a coal-loading facility.
The village was also home to a number of other businesses, including a brickyard, a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.

Geography

Okawville is located at 38°25′17″N 89°37′17″W (38.421445, -89.621345). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.86 square miles (2.23 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Okawville is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.
