Oakwood Hills is a village located in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census, up from 2,717 in 2000. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
History
Oakwood Hills was incorporated in 1957. The village was named after the oak trees that were abundant in the area. The first settlers in the area were German immigrants who arrived in the late 1800s. They were attracted to the area by the abundance of natural resources, including timber and fertile soil.
Geography
Oakwood Hills is located at 42°14'25"N 88°20'17"W (42.240278, -88.338139). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
Oakwood Hills is a small, rural community with a population of just over 2,800 people. The village is home to a variety of businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a gas station, a bank, and several restaurants. The village also has a post office and a library.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,288.2 people per square mile (496.7/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 522.2 per square mile (201.6/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 2.3% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $60,938, and the median income for a family was $68,750. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $31,250 for females.
