Neponset Summary

Neponset is a small village located in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ottawa–Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Neponset was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New England. The town was named after Neponset, Massachusetts, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1855.
In 1856, the first school was built in Neponset. The school was a one-room building that served as both a school and a church. In 1872, a new two-story school was built. This school served the community until it was replaced by a new building in 1925.

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.7/km2).
