Mitchell Summary

Mitchell is a small city located in Lawrence County, Illinois, United States. The city is situated on the banks of the Embarras River, and is part of the larger Terre Haute metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Mitchell was 1,845.

Geography

Mitchell is located at 39°25'25" North, 87°45'45" West (39.423, -87.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

The area that is now Mitchell was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was originally known as "Embarras", after the river that runs through it. In 1837, the town was renamed "Mitchell" after a local landowner, William Mitchell.
The town was officially incorporated in 1867. During the late 19th century, Mitchell was a thriving agricultural center, with a variety of crops being grown in the area. The town also had a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a furniture factory.
In the early 20th century, Mitchell began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities.
