Mettawa Summary
Mettawa is a village located in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
History
Mettawa was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after a Native American chief who lived in the area. The first post office was established in 1837.
In the late 19th century, Mettawa was a popular summer resort for wealthy Chicagoans. The village was incorporated in 1957.
Geography
Mettawa is located at 42°17'17" North, 87°54'45" West (42.288, -87.912). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Mettawa is home to several businesses, including a golf course, a winery, and a horse farm. The village is also home to the headquarters of the American Horse Council.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 197 households, and 156 families residing in the village. The population density was 454.3 people per square mile (175.7/km2). There were 202 housing units at an average density of 168.3 per square mile (64.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.
There were 197 households, out of which 37.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.0% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% were non-families. 17.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.
