History

Merrionette Park was incorporated as a village in 1959. The village was named after the Merrionette family, who were early settlers in the area. The Merrionettes were a prominent family in the area and owned a large amount of land. The village was originally part of the town of Worth, which was annexed by the city of Chicago in the late 19th century.

Geography

Merrionette Park is located at 41°41'17" North, 87°44'45" West (41.6879, -87.7457). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

Economy

Merrionette Park is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to work in Chicago. The village does have some small businesses, including a few restaurants, a grocery store, and a few other retail stores.

As of the 2010 census, there were 4,845 people, 1,945 households, and 1,323 families residing in the village. The population density was 5,400 people per square mile (2,093/km2). There were 2,068 housing units at an average density of 2,279 per square mile (882/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
