Maunie Summary
Maunie is a small unincorporated community located in White County, Illinois. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the state, about 10 miles south of Carmi and about 20 miles north of Golconda. The population of Maunie was estimated to be around 200 people in 2000.
History
Maunie was first settled in 1818 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as “Maunie’s Station”, named after the first settler, John Maunie. The town was officially incorporated in 1837.
In the early days, Maunie was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.
In the late 19th century, the town began to decline. The mills closed and the population began to dwindle. By the early 20th century, the town was nearly abandoned.
Geography
Maunie is located in the southeastern corner of White County, Illinois. It is situated in the Shawnee National Forest, about 10 miles south of Carmi and about 20 miles north of Golconda. The town is located on the banks of the Little Wabash River.
