History
Mason was founded in 1837 by William Mason, a settler from New York. The village was incorporated in 1867.
Mason was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1863. The Battle of Mason was fought between Union and Confederate forces, and resulted in a Union victory.

Mason is a small, rural community with a primarily agricultural economy. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 517.2 per square mile (199.6/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
