History
Marion was founded in 1839 by William and Mary Brickey, who named the city after Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion. The city was incorporated in 1857. During the Civil War, the city was a major center of activity for the Union Army, and was the site of several battles. After the war, the city experienced a period of growth and prosperity, and by the early 20th century, it had become a major industrial center.

Marion is located at 37°45'N 88°59'W (37.75, -88.98). It is situated in the southern part of the state, in Williamson County. The city is located along the Big Muddy River, and is part of the Metro East region of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The city has a total area of 11.2 square miles, of which 11.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Marion's economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The city is home to several major employers, including the Marion Industrial Center, which is a large industrial park that houses several manufacturing companies. Other major employers include the Williamson County Hospital, the Marion VA Medical Center, and the Marion Correctional Center.
