Lexington Summary
Lexington is a small village located in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The village is situated in the central part of the state, approximately 25 miles northeast of Bloomington and 130 miles southwest of Chicago. The population of Lexington was 1,717 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Lexington was first settled in 1829 by a group of settlers from Lexington, Kentucky. The village was originally known as Lexington Station, and was incorporated in 1867. The village was named after the original settlers’ hometown of Lexington, Kentucky.
The village of Lexington was a major stop on the Illinois Central Railroad, and the railroad was a major factor in the growth of the village. The railroad provided transportation for goods and people, and allowed the village to become a major agricultural center.
Geography
Lexington is located at 40°30'25" North, 88°51'45" West (40.506944, -88.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Lexington is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of corn, soybeans, and wheat. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,717 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,902.2 people per square mile (735.2/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 819.4 per square mile (316.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.5% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
