History

Karnak was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named after the ancient Egyptian city of Karnak. The first post office was established in 1855.
Karnak was incorporated as a village in 1872. The village was home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.
In the early 1900s, Karnak was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000. The town had a bank, a newspaper, a movie theater, and several churches.

Economy

Karnak's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a poultry farm.
Karnak also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 776.4 people per square mile (300.2/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 331.4 per square mile (127.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,845.
