Inverness Summary
Inverness is a village located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located approximately 25 miles northwest of the city. The population was 7,399 at the 2010 census.
History
Inverness was first settled in the early 1800s by Scottish immigrants. The village was originally known as "Inverglen," which is Gaelic for "at the mouth of the glen." The village was officially incorporated in 1956.
Geography
Inverness is located at 42°7′17″N 88°7′17″W (42.1214, -88.1214). According to the 2010 census, Inverness has a total area of 4.9 square miles (12.7 km2), all land.
Economy
Inverness is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The village is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Inverness Corporation, a real estate development and management company.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 7,399 people, 2,845 households, and 2,072 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,509.3 people per square mile (584.2/km2). There were 2,976 housing units at an average density of 605.3 per square mile (233.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $90,945, and the median income for a family was $103,945. Males had a median income of $76,945 versus $50,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $41,945. About 1.7% of families and 2.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.3% of those under age 18 and 2.3% of those age 65 or over.
